Alpenglow, Green River
Canyonlands National Park, Utah, 2015
Frequently misidentified as the last direct light of sunset or the first direct light of sunrise, alpenglow is neither. It occurs well after sunset or before sunrise and is indirect light bouncing off atmospheric water and ice. After a wild sunset last week along the Green River, I was stunned to see such an intense glow on this canyon wall as I made my way back to camp. I've only ever seen such a strong glow one other time, and that was also after a great sunset with lots of clouds. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
