Dark Depths of Black Canyon
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado, 2014
It is called Black Canyon not because of the color of the rock (though much of it is very dark and even black) but because the sun seems never to reach much of the canyon's bottom. Bright sunshine on parts of the canyon walls and deep shadows on other parts also makes photographing Black Canyon a challenge because of the extremely high dynamic range. I waited until after sunset to make this image to avoid the high-dynamic-range problem and to show the colors of the canyon while also including its dark heart.
