Island Lake and Upper Ice Lakes Basin
San Juan National Forest, Colorado
This is the place (yeah, I know; some of you are snickering at that one) that compelled me to leave Utah after a dozen years. Okay, there was more to it than just that, but it wasn't long after a visit to the San Juan National Forest and a series of day-hikes in this gorgeous mountain terrain that Crystal and I decided to make a change. The trail through this area reaches over 13,000 feet where I made this photograph, and it is part of the Hardrock 100 Endurance Run, of which the first executive rule is, "No whining.".
