Milky Way over the Maroon Bells
White River National Forest, Colorado, 2013
I made this the night before the government shut down in the fall of 2013. The next morning, as the Tripod Army was leaving Maroon Lake after sunrise, we all were politely kicked out of White River National Forest by apologetic rangers, ultimately because of the bickerings of D.C. politicians unacquainted with reality. While that act of lunacy is different from the much more serious threats facing public lands today, it still is a reminder that unless we speak up through voting and by supporting organizations and agencies devoted to the protection and preservation of our public lands, our access to those lands will remain tenuous at best and be eliminated, and for much longer than 16 days, at worst.
