On the Ridge Between Life and Death
Sneffels Range, San Juan National Forest, Colorado, 2012
On the Ridge Between Life and Death, by eminent mountain climber and writer David Roberts, is the best book about mountaineering I've read yet. This image shows some of the spires and pinnacles of Mount Sneffels (14,150') being overtaken by clouds rolling in from the west. When those clouds began to swirl and build, I should have descended immediately. I didn't. Instead, I kept going for the summit and turned around just a few feet shy of it when lightning began to buzz within a mile of that summit and my head. At the time, I felt perhaps the greatest sense of panic I've ever experienced. Now, I just want to be up there again. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
