Paintbrush at Ice Lake
San Juan National Forest, Colorado, 2012
It was love at first sight when I finally got to Colorado's San Juans in the summer of 2012, a visit that stimulated my move from Utah to Colorado the following year. Ice Lake, near Silverton, quickly became one of my favorite places in part because of its lush wildflower displays. We had to endure a short but violent thunderstorm soon after reaching the lake, but that clearing storm gave some terrific variable, muted lighting, allowing me to get some great detail in these wildflowers without having the highlights blown out.
