Petrified Wood at Twilight
Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, New Mexico, 2014
This large, petrified tree trunk gives a clue about how vastly different this landscape used to be. Trees over 100' tall and 6' feet in diameter grew here among other lush vegetation when dinosaurs roamed the present-day western U.S. Now, very little grows in this desert covered by ash spewed by an ancient volcano.
