Racefans at The Grandstand
Racetrack Valley, Death Valley National Park, California
One of the flattest (curved) places on Earth, The Racetrack in Death Valley NP is perhaps the single most surreal landscape I've ever visited. Named for the famous moving rocks at the southern end, this playa (dry lake bed) is as impressive up close as it is from a great distance. I made this image from the trail that leads to the top of nearby Ubehebe Peak, the summit of which lies almost 2000' above The Racetrack. I hiked the trail in order to gain a perspective of the vastness of the playa, a perspective that was dramatically enhanced by the two visitors walking away from The Grandstand, a chunk of dolomite at the northern end of The Racetrack.
