Rock Glacier on Engineer Mountain
Engineer Mountain, San Juan National Forest, Colorado
Engineer Mountain is the prominent peak that dominates the skyline along much of US-550 between Durango and Silverton. The summit reaches 12,968', making it only the 655th highest peak in Colorado! Yet, the rock glacier on the mountain's north side, spectacular summit views, and wildflowers in the meadow below make this a terrific day-hike destination. Watch out for afternoon thunderstorms, like the one rolling up in this image, during the monsoon season. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
