Solar Eclipse Sequence

Targhee National Forest

It's not a stretch to claim that exaggeration runs rampant in our contemporary culture. Class I or II hikes are often hailed as "epic;" "Games of the Century" in practically every major sport seem now to take place every year; "outrage" is on a hair-trigger, and the most prominent American political figure is, depending on the person you ask, either the best ever or the worst possible. Much ado similarly was made in the days preceding yesterday's solar eclipse with one important distinction: For those of us lucky enough to witness the entire sequence and especially those few, precious moments when the moon fit just right between our nearest star and the earth, even the superlatives failed. One day, I hope to find the words; for now, this sequence will have to do. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
