Starry Night at Upper Ice Lake

San Juan National Forest, Colorado, 2013

The first snow of the 2013-2014 season came to the San Juans during the last third of September, but it wasn't deep enough to demand anything more than a tolerance for slippery trail conditions and damp boots.  A late-rising moon gave me plenty of time to photograph the bright band of the Milky Way with minimal stray light, and the snow gave good surface reflection for the ambient starlight.  This vertical composition emphasizes the scale of the Milky Way band relative to the landscape.
