Stars over Lake Blanche
Big Cottonwood Canyon, Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Utah
This was my first real attempt at photographing the night sky, and it happened to be in a place I've visited many times and now dearly miss. Short but steep, this trail beginning at the S-curves in Big Cottonwood Canyon, just southeast of downtown Salt Lake City, takes you to beautiful Lake Blanche, which sits at the foot of Sundial Peak. I made this photograph with a bit less than a first-quarter moon about an hour before it set, which provided the bright yet soft front-lighting on Sundial and the peaks farther in the distance. The bright light in the sky on the right side of the frame is from the city lights of the Provo area. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
