Stars over Temple of the Moon
Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, 2014
Over the last year, I've spent a few nights photographing the stars, but this particular night, in the early morning hours of May 1, was the darkest, quietest that I can ever remember, so dark and quiet that it was even unnerving at one point. Within a few seconds of feeling a chill run down my back at the mental image of an opportunistic mountain lion, I was somehow reassured by the hooting of an owl somewhere close by.
Temple of the Moon is less than half the height of its neighbor, ~400-foot Temple of the Sun, but it's still a challenge to light during a new moon. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
