Zion Wilderness, Zion National Park, Utah, 2004
Hiking up the Left Fork of North Creek takes you to the famed Subway, a spectacular slot canyon that has the appearance of a subway tube. There's a "standard" way to photograph The Subway that lots of people repeat, but I prefer my own take. I made this image by watching the movement of the water over the sandstone and into this pool, imagining what it might look like with a different temporal dimension, and making the exposure over several seconds to achieve that vision. The reflected light from elsewhere in the canyon coupled with the dark contrast on the far right edge emphasize the subway shape of the rock formation. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
