Two Quarters and a Half
Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park, 2012
Half Dome might be the single most recognizable landmark of Yosemite Valley, but it certainly is not the only dome in the area. (It's not really a half, either.) The Quarter Domes dominate the left side of this image, and Sentinel Dome is a short walk from Glacier Point. The prominent feature in the middle of the frame is Mount Watkins, named for Carleton Watkins, whose landscape photographs of Yosemite Valley were crucially important in the granting of Yosemite Valley (and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias) to the state of California for its preservation and public use.
