Hayden Valley, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
After shooting a pleasant sunrise at the lower falls of the Yellowstone River during the first weekend of May 2013, my friend David Thomas and I turned south toward Hayden Valley in the hopes of spotting some wildlife. As we crested a hill at the northern end of the valley, we were stunned to find this gray wolf just a few feet from the road and lying in the grass and sage within fifteen feet of this bison. Unfortunately, our presence (and that of a dozen others who arrived on the scene after just a few minutes) compelled the wolf to rise and ultimately walk across the road to the forest's edge, but the way in which the wolf and bison interacted was priceless to witness. In this image, you can see the almost submissive way in which the wolf is walking away, while the bison is keeping a wary eye on the predator. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
